The Man Who Gave England the Word of God

William Tyndale was an English scholar and reformer who did something so dangerous that it cost him his life: he translated the Bible into English so that ordinary people — not just priests and scholars — could read the word of God for themselves. In doing so, he helped shape the English language itself, and his words echo in every English Bible printed to this day.

Working in exile on the continent, hunted by agents of King Henry VIII and the English Church, Tyndale used Gutenberg’s printing press to produce the first printed English New Testament in 1526, smuggling copies into England hidden in bales of cloth and sacks of flour. His translation was so masterful — so clear, so rhythmic, so alive — that when the King James Bible was compiled in 1611, scholars estimate that up to 90% of its New Testament was drawn directly from Tyndale’s work. He was betrayed, arrested, strangled, and burned at the stake in 1536. His reported last words were: “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.” Three years later, Henry VIII ordered an English Bible placed in every church in England.
