The Greatest Writer Who Ever Lived

William Shakespeare was a glover’s son from Stratford-upon-Avon who came to London, joined a theatre company, and proceeded to write 37 plays and 154 sonnets that are still performed, studied, and loved in every language on earth more than four centuries after his death. No writer before or since has understood the human condition with such depth, such compassion, and such devastating precision.

Shakespeare invented or popularized over 1,700 words still used in English today — including “assassination,” “bedroom,” “laughable,” and “obscene.” His characters — Hamlet, Lear, Macbeth, Othello, Juliet, Falstaff, Prospero — are as vivid and as real as any person who ever lived. His plays explore every dimension of human experience: love and jealousy, power and corruption, grief and madness, comedy and tragedy, the heroic and the absurd. He wrote for groundlings standing in the rain and for queens seated in royal boxes, and he satisfied them both. He died in 1616, leaving behind no manuscripts, almost no personal letters, and a will that mentioned his “second-best bed.” The greatest writer in history remains, in many ways, a mystery.
