William Marshal – Royal Protectors Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Greatest Knight Who Ever Lived
William Marshal was called by his contemporaries the greatest knight who ever lived — and history has not disagreed. Over a career spanning six decades and the reigns of five English kings, Marshal rose from a landless younger son to become Earl of Pembroke, regent of England, and the most trusted protector of the Plantagenet crown.
As a young knight he was virtually unbeatable in tournament combat, winning hundreds of contests and the horses, armor, and ransoms that made his fortune. He served Henry II, the Young King, Richard the Lionheart, King John, and the young Henry III with unwavering loyalty — even when those kings were at war with each other. At the age of 70, he personally led the English army to victory at the Battle of Lincoln in 1217, saving the young king’s throne from French invasion. He died at 72, having never broken his oath to any lord he served. On his deathbed he said: “I have been the greatest warrior in the world, and now I am dying.”
