The Weaver – Common People Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Thread That Held Society Together
Cloth was the currency of the medieval world — and the Weaver was the person who made it. From the rough wool that kept a peasant warm through winter to the fine silks and tapestries that adorned the halls of kings, the weaver’s loom was at the center of medieval economic life, producing the most traded commodity in Europe for centuries.
The great cloth towns of Flanders, Florence, and England built their wealth entirely on the backs of weavers — men, women, and children who worked at the loom from childhood, producing the textiles that drove international trade and funded the cathedrals, palaces, and wars of the age. Weaving was one of the few skilled trades open to women, and many of the finest weavers in medieval Europe were female. The Flemish wool trade that made cities like Bruges and Ghent among the richest in the world rested entirely on their craft. Every banner that flew over a battlefield, every tapestry that told a story on a castle wall, every cloak that kept a traveler alive — all of it began at the loom.
