The miller held a monopoly granted by the lord of the manor, and he took his payment in grain — a portion of every sack brought to his millstones. This made him indispensable and deeply resented in equal measure. Medieval literature is full of dishonest millers with their thumbs on the scale, yet the reality was more complex — the miller was also a skilled engineer who maintained the great wooden machinery of the windmill or watermill, understood the flow of water and wind, and kept the community fed through every season. Chaucer’s Miller in The Canterbury Tales is one of literature’s great rogues — loud, strong, and utterly unforgettable.
