Before electricity, before gas lamps, before any modern source of light, there was the Candle Maker — the craftsperson whose work held back the darkness and made civilized life possible after sunset. In a world where night fell absolutely, candles were not a luxury. They were survival.

The chandler, as the candle maker was known, supplied light to churches, monasteries, royal courts, and ordinary households alike. Tallow candles — made from rendered animal fat — were the everyday staple, smoky and pungent but affordable. Beeswax candles burned cleaner and brighter and were reserved for the wealthy and the Church, whose altars demanded pure, sweet-smelling light as an offering to God. The chandler’s guild was one of the most important in every medieval city, and the great chandlers who supplied cathedrals and royal palaces wielded considerable influence. Every scholar who read after dark, every surgeon who operated by candlelight, every family that gathered around the table in winter — all of them depended on the candle maker’s craft.
