Sir James Douglas – Legendary Scots Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Black Douglas — Most Feared Knight in Christendom
Sir James Douglas, known to the English as The Black Douglas, was Robert the Bruce’s greatest commander and the most feared knight of his age — a warrior so relentless and so terrifying in battle that English mothers reportedly used his name to frighten children into obedience: “Hush ye, hush ye, little pet ye, the Black Douglas shall not get ye.”
Douglas won 57 battles and skirmishes for Scotland without a single defeat, conducting a brilliant guerrilla campaign against English forces that kept Scotland’s independence alive through its darkest years. His final act was as extraordinary as his life — tasked by the dying Robert the Bruce to carry his heart to the Holy Land, Douglas was killed in battle in Spain fighting the Moors, hurling the casket containing Bruce’s heart into the enemy ranks and charging after it to his death.
