Michelangelo – Renaissance Influencers Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Divine One
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni — known simply as Michelangelo, and to his contemporaries as Il Divino, the Divine One — was the greatest sculptor who ever lived and one of the supreme painters and architects in the history of Western art. In a career spanning seven decades, he produced works of such overwhelming beauty and technical mastery that they have never been surpassed.
His David, carved from a single flawed block of marble that other sculptors had abandoned, stands as the defining image of the Renaissance ideal — the perfect human form, alert and fearless on the eve of battle. His ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted lying on his back over four years of physical agony, is the most celebrated work of art in the world. His Pietà, carved when he was just 24 years old, made the entire art world stop breathing. He designed the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, which still dominates the skyline of the city. He was cantankerous, obsessive, and almost supernaturally gifted — and he knew it. When asked how he had carved the David, he reportedly said: “I simply removed everything that was not David.”
