Medieval & Renaissance Dice Games — Six Period Dice Games
Six Games of Luck, Risk & Strategy
Six games. A handful of dice. Centuries of gaming tradition.
Long before game consoles and boxed board games, a few dice were enough to provide an evening of competition, wagering, laughter, and occasionally trouble.
Our Medieval & Renaissance Dice Games collection brings together six easy-to-play games inspired by the dice-playing traditions of the medieval, Renaissance, Viking, Celtic, and early-modern worlds.
The set includes:
Passage • Raffle • Taflkast • In and In • The Clan Throw • Mumchance
Each game has its own combination of luck, risk, scoring, and strategy, making this a great addition to family game night, a Renaissance faire, homeschool history lesson, or living-history demonstration.
Dice Have a Very Long History
Dice are among the oldest gaming objects known to archaeology. By the medieval period, dice games were common throughout Europe and were played by people from many levels of society.
Dice appear in archaeological finds, artwork, literature, and historical records. They were small, portable, and required little more than a table—or sometimes just a convenient patch of ground—to play.
In the Viking world, gaming pieces and dice have been recovered from archaeological sites and burials. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, dice games were played in homes, taverns, camps, streets, and royal courts.
They were so popular that authorities repeatedly attempted to regulate gambling and dice playing. Historical records mentioning restrictions on dice provide us with an amusing clue to just how widespread the pastime had become.
Six Ways to Roll the Dice
- Passage — A traditional-style race to roll the required numbers and complete your passage before your opponents.
- Raffle — A simple dice game associated with early European gaming traditions, where particular combinations determine the winner.
- Taflkast — A Norse-inspired dice challenge connecting the set with the gaming culture of the Viking world.
- In and In — A historic English dice game of repeated throws, risk, and fortune.
- The Clan Throw — A Celtic-inspired game created to capture the fun of gathering around the dice and competing for the strongest throw.
- Mumchance — A name with roots in early English gaming and entertainment, recalling games in which chance—and sometimes silence—was part of the amusement.
History You Can Play
Not every old dice game has survived with a complete set of original rules. Some are well documented, while others survive only through names, references, or fragments of information.
Rather than pretending otherwise, our collection combines historically documented games with historically inspired games, allowing players to experience the kinds of simple dice entertainment enjoyed across the centuries.
