Martin Luther – Renaissance Influencers Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Man Who Split the Church
Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk and theology professor who, in 1517, nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg — and in doing so, ignited the Protestant Reformation, shattered the unity of Western Christianity, and set in motion a chain of events that would reshape Europe’s politics, culture, and wars for the next two centuries.
Luther’s quarrel began with the sale of indulgences — the Church’s practice of selling forgiveness — but it quickly grew into a fundamental challenge to papal authority itself. Excommunicated by Pope Leo X and declared an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor at the Diet of Worms in 1521, Luther famously refused to recant: “Here I stand. I can do no other.” Protected by the Elector of Saxony, he translated the entire Bible into German — using Gutenberg’s printing press to spread it across the continent — and in doing so helped forge the modern German language. No single act of religious defiance in history has had greater consequences.
