Malcolm III (Canmore) – Legendary Scots Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The King Who United Scotland
Malcolm III, known as Canmore — from the Gaelic for “Great Chief” or “Big Head” — was one of the most consequential kings in Scottish history, the warrior monarch who ended decades of dynastic turmoil, avenged his father Duncan I’s murder at the hands of Macbeth, and established the royal line that would shape Scotland for generations.
Malcolm’s defeat of Macbeth at the Battle of Lumphanan in 1057 restored the rightful Scottish throne and inspired one of the greatest works of literature in the English language — Shakespeare’s Macbeth. His marriage to St. Margaret brought profound cultural and religious transformation to Scotland, and together they built a court that became a beacon of learning and faith in the medieval north. Malcolm died in battle at Alnwick in 1093, fighting to the last — a king in every sense of the word.
