Isabella MacDuff – Legendary Scots Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Woman Who Crowned a King
Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan, performed one of the most courageous acts in Scottish history — defying her own husband and the might of England to crown Robert the Bruce as King of Scots at Scone in 1306, exercising the ancient hereditary right of the MacDuff family to inaugurate the Scottish king when her brother, the Earl of Fife, failed to appear.
It was an act of breathtaking defiance. Edward I of England was furious. When the Scottish cause collapsed shortly after, Isabella was captured and punished with singular cruelty — imprisoned for four years in a cage suspended from the walls of Berwick Castle, exposed to the elements and public view, as a warning to all who dared defy the English crown. She endured it with extraordinary courage. Without her act of bravery, Robert the Bruce may never have been king.
