Galileo Galilei – Renaissance Influencers Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Father of Modern Science
Galileo Galilei pointed a telescope at the sky in 1609 and changed humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe forever. What he saw — moons orbiting Jupiter, mountains on the Moon, phases of Venus — proved beyond doubt that the Earth was not the center of the cosmos, and that the Church’s centuries-old model of the universe was wrong. It was one of the most consequential moments in the history of human thought.
Galileo was mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and engineer — the first true scientist in the modern sense, a man who insisted that nature must be understood through observation and experiment rather than ancient authority. He discovered the law of falling bodies, invented an improved thermometer, and designed a military compass. His support for the Copernican model of the solar system brought him before the Inquisition in 1633, where, under threat of torture, he recanted. Legend holds that as he rose from his knees he muttered: “And yet it moves.” He spent the rest of his life under house arrest. The Church formally acknowledged his correctness in 1992 — 359 years later.
