The Man Who Proved the World Was Round

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer in the service of Spain who conceived and led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe — the most audacious voyage in the history of exploration, and the one that finally proved beyond all doubt that the Earth was a sphere and that all its oceans were connected.

Setting sail from Seville in 1519 with five ships and 270 men, Magellan navigated the treacherous strait at the southern tip of South America that now bears his name, crossed the vast and unknown Pacific — so vast that his crew nearly starved and died of scurvy before reaching land — and reached the Philippines, where he was killed in battle on the island of Mactan in 1521, fighting in a skirmish he had no need to enter. He never completed the circumnavigation himself. His navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano brought the one surviving ship — the Victoria — and just 18 of the original 270 men back to Spain in 1522. The voyage that proved the world was round cost nearly every man who made it. It changed everything anyway.
