Erasmus of Rotterdam – Renaissance Influencers Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Prince of Humanists
Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam was the greatest scholar of the Northern Renaissance — a Catholic priest, theologian, and satirist whose razor-sharp intellect, prodigious output, and passionate belief in reason, education, and reform made him the most widely read author in Europe during his lifetime and the conscience of an age tearing itself apart.
Erasmus corresponded with every major thinker of his era — Thomas More, Martin Luther, Henry VIII, and the Pope — and his In Praise of Folly, a devastating satirical attack on the corruption of the Church and the vanity of human ambition, became one of the bestselling books of the 16th century. He produced the first critical Greek edition of the New Testament, which Tyndale used as the basis for his English translation. He believed passionately that the Church needed reform — but when Luther split it apart, Erasmus refused to follow, insisting that unity and reason mattered more than revolution. Caught between the old world and the new, he was attacked by both sides and claimed by neither. He remains one of history’s most fascinating and most misunderstood minds.
