The Lord of War

El Cid — born Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar around 1043 — was the greatest military commander of medieval Spain and one of the most extraordinary warriors in European history: a Castilian knight who fought for Christian and Muslim rulers alike, conquered the city of Valencia, and became a legend so vast that his story blurred into myth within a generation of his death.

His name comes from the Arabic al-Sayyid — “The Lord” — a title given to him by the Moorish soldiers who fought under his command and respected him above all others. Exiled twice by King Alfonso VI of Castile, El Cid did not crumble — he carved out his own kingdom at Valencia, ruling it with justice and military genius until his death in 1099. Legend holds that his body was strapped to his horse after death and sent into battle one final time, routing the enemy by his mere presence. No other warrior in history has inspired quite that story.
