Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (The Leper King) – Royal Protectors Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Leper King Who Never Surrendered
Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, known as the Leper King, was one of the most heroic and heartbreaking figures of the medieval world — a king who ruled the most contested city on earth while slowly being consumed by leprosy, yet who never once allowed his disintegrating body to diminish his iron will or his genius for war.
Diagnosed with leprosy as a child, Baldwin was told he would never rule. He ruled for eleven years. At the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, at just 16 years old, he led a vastly outnumbered Crusader force to a stunning victory over Saladin’s army — reportedly fighting at the front of his troops, his leprous hands unable to grip a sword, yet present and commanding. By the end of his reign he was blind, unable to walk, and carried on a litter into battle. He died at 24, having spent every year of his reign protecting Jerusalem against the greatest military mind of the age. Saladin himself mourned him as a worthy adversary.
