Unn the Deep-Minded (also known as Aud the Deep-Minded) was one of the most extraordinary figures of the Viking Age — a Norse noblewoman who, after the deaths of her husband and son, led her entire household on an epic journey from Scotland to Iceland, where she became one of the founding settlers of the island.

A woman of immense wisdom, dignity, and faith, Unn freed her thralls upon arriving in Iceland, granted land to her followers, and is remembered in the Laxdæla saga as a matriarch of unmatched character. She chose her own death on her own terms — seated upright at a feast she had hosted, dressed in her finest clothes.
