Before a man could sail under the black flag, he swore the Pirate Oath — a solemn bond of brotherhood, loyalty, and shared fate that governed life aboard a pirate vessel. Far from the lawless chaos of legend, pirate ships were governed by surprisingly democratic codes of conduct, negotiated and agreed upon by the entire crew before setting sail.

These articles covered everything from the division of plunder and compensation for injuries, to rules against fighting aboard ship and the punishment for desertion. Every man signed or made his mark — and every man was bound by it. The oath was the foundation of the pirate republic, a radical experiment in equality centuries ahead of its time.
