The Knights Templar were the most powerful, most feared, and most mysterious military order in medieval history — warrior monks who took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, then became the elite shock troops of the Crusades, the bankers of medieval Europe, and the guardians of pilgrims, kings, and the Christian faith itself.

Founded around 1119 to protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land, the Templars grew within a generation into a vast international organization with their own fleet, their own network of castles, and a financial system so sophisticated it is considered a forerunner of modern banking. On the battlefield they were ferocious and disciplined beyond any other force of the age — forbidden to retreat unless outnumbered more than three to one. Their sudden destruction in 1307, when King Philip IV of France had them arrested, tortured, and burned on charges of heresy, remains one of history’s greatest conspiracies. Their legend has never died.
