Stede Bonnet – Pirates Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Gentleman Pirate
Stede Bonnet is one of the most unlikely figures in the history of piracy — a wealthy Barbadian landowner and gentleman who, in 1717, abandoned his comfortable life, purchased a sloop, and took to the seas as a pirate with absolutely no sailing experience whatsoever.
Dubbed the Gentleman Pirate, Bonnet outfitted his ship, the Revenge, with a library of books and paid his crew a salary — a highly unusual arrangement in the pirate world. He briefly sailed alongside Blackbeard, who essentially took command of his ship out of pity. Despite his amateur beginnings, Bonnet captured dozens of vessels before being captured and hanged in Charleston, South Carolina in 1718.
