St. Patrick – Legendary Scots Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
Ireland’s Patron Saint Was Scottish
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was almost certainly born in Roman Britain — most historians place his birthplace in what is now Scotland or northern England, likely near the Firth of Clyde. Kidnapped by Irish pirates at the age of 16 and sold into slavery in Ireland, Patrick spent six years as a shepherd before escaping, returning home, and then — in one of history’s most remarkable acts of forgiveness — going back to Ireland as a missionary to the very people who had enslaved him.
His mission transformed Ireland, spreading Christianity across the island and establishing a monastic tradition that would preserve learning and literacy through the Dark Ages. The boy taken in chains from Scottish shores became the spiritual father of a nation — and one of the most beloved saints in the world.
