St. Louis IX of France – Royal Protectors Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Crusader King Who Became a Saint
Louis IX of France was the most revered Christian king of the medieval world — a warrior, a judge, a crusader, and a man of such profound personal holiness that he was canonized just 27 years after his death, the only French king ever to be declared a saint.
Louis ruled France for 44 years with a combination of military courage and extraordinary personal humility. He led two Crusades, was captured in Egypt during the Seventh Crusade and ransomed at enormous cost, and returned home not broken but more determined than ever. He was famous for dispensing justice personally under an oak tree at Vincennes, hearing the cases of the poorest of his subjects with the same attention he gave to nobles. He built the breathtaking Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to house the Crown of Thorns, and died on crusade in Tunis in 1270, his last word reportedly “Jerusalem.” A king who protected his people body and soul.
