The Man Who Moved the Earth

Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish mathematician, astronomer, and canon of the Catholic Church who quietly, methodically, and with devastating intellectual precision dismantled humanity’s most fundamental assumption: that the Earth stood still at the center of the universe. His heliocentric model — placing the Sun at the center of the solar system — was the most radical scientific idea of the millennium, and he knew it.

Copernicus spent decades refining his theory, fully aware of the storm it would unleash. He circulated his ideas privately for years before finally publishing his masterwork, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, in 1543 — the year he died, legend holding that he received the first printed copy on the very day of his death. He never faced the Inquisition; that fate fell to Galileo (card #7), who built on his foundations. But it was Copernicus who first dared to move the Earth — who looked at the heavens with clear eyes and concluded that everything humanity had believed about its place in the cosmos was wrong. The revolution that bears his name — the Copernican Revolution — is still the standard by which all paradigm shifts are measured.
