Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, was the first European to set foot on the shores of North America — nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Around 1000 AD, he led an expedition from Greenland to a land he called Vinland, believed today to be the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Celebrated in both the Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red, Leif Erikson stands as one of history’s greatest explorers — a man whose courage and curiosity carried him to the edge of the known world and beyond. The United States officially recognizes Leif Erikson Day every October 9th in his honor.
