John Newton lived one of history’s most extraordinary lives of transformation. A sailor and sea captain who spent years in the brutal Atlantic slave trade, Newton experienced a dramatic spiritual awakening during a violent storm at sea in 1748 — a moment he believed was divine intervention that spared his life.

Years later, Newton renounced the slave trade, became an Anglican minister, and in 1772 wrote the words that would echo through centuries: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” He also became a key witness in the British Parliament’s abolition hearings, helping to end the transatlantic slave trade. His life is a testament to the power of conscience, courage, and redemption.
