Freydís Eiríksdóttir, daughter of Erik the Red and sister of Leif Erikson, was one of the most formidable women in the Norse sagas. She sailed to Vinland (North America) and, according to the Saga of the Greenlanders, single-handedly turned the tide of a skraeling attack — heavily pregnant, she grabbed a sword, beat it against her chest, and let out a war cry so fierce that the attackers fled in terror.
