Flora MacDonald – Legendary Scots Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Woman Who Saved Bonnie Prince Charlie
Flora MacDonald is one of the most celebrated heroines in Scottish history — a young Highland woman who risked her life to smuggle the fugitive Bonnie Prince Charlie to safety after the catastrophic Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
Disguising the prince as her Irish maidservant “Betty Burke,” Flora escorted him by boat “over the sea to Skye” — a journey immortalized in the famous Skye Boat Song. Arrested shortly after and imprisoned in the Tower of London, Flora bore her captivity with such dignity and grace that she became a celebrated figure even among her captors. Released after a year, she later emigrated to America, returned to Scotland, and died at home on Skye in 1790, her legend secure forever.
