The Queen Who Ruled Two Kingdoms

Eleanor of Aquitaine was the most powerful woman of the medieval world — Queen of France, then Queen of England, mother of two kings including Richard the Lionheart, and a political force of nature whose influence shaped the destiny of Europe for over half a century.

Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right at just 15, Eleanor brought the wealthiest territory in France to her first marriage to King Louis VII, accompanied him on the Second Crusade, and then — in one of the most audacious moves of the medieval age — had the marriage annulled and married the future King Henry II of England just weeks later. When Henry imprisoned her for supporting their sons’ rebellion, she endured 16 years of captivity with unbroken dignity. Released upon Henry’s death, she immediately resumed governing — at nearly 70 years old — serving as regent, diplomat, and the iron backbone of the Plantagenet dynasty. She protected not just a crown, but a dynasty.
