The Pirate With a Conscience

Edward England was one of the most active and widely traveled pirates of the Golden Age — raiding along the coasts of Africa and the Indian Ocean in the early 1720s with his flagship, the Fancy. Born Edward Seegar in Ireland, he took the name England and became known not just for his daring raids, but for something rare among pirates: mercy.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Edward England was known for treating captured crews humanely, often releasing prisoners unharmed and even returning their personal belongings. This compassion ultimately proved his undoing — his own crew, frustrated by his leniency after the battle with the Cassandra, marooned him on the island of Mauritius. He eventually made his way to Madagascar, where he died in poverty, but his reputation for honor among thieves endures.
