Christopher Columbus – Renaissance Influencers Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
The Voyage That Changed the World
Christopher Columbus was a Genoese navigator, visionary, and relentless self-promoter who sailed west into the unknown in 1492 — funded by Isabella I of Castile (card #12 of the Royal Protectors Series) — and made contact between the Old World and the New in an event that permanently and irrevocably altered the course of human history.
Columbus spent years being rejected by the courts of Portugal and Spain before Isabella finally backed his voyage. On 12 October 1492, after 36 days at sea with a crew on the edge of mutiny, he made landfall in the Bahamas. He believed until his death that he had reached Asia — never fully grasping that he had found an entirely unknown continent. The consequences of his voyage were staggering: the Columbian Exchange of plants, animals, and diseases transformed both hemispheres, the Americas were opened to European colonization, and the global balance of power shifted forever. Columbus himself was a flawed and complicated figure — courageous, obsessive, and brutal in his treatment of the peoples he encountered. History has never stopped arguing about him. But the world he made possible is the one we live in.
