Captain William Kidd – Pirates Series | Official Renaissance Collector Card
Privateer, Pirate, or Scapegoat?
Captain William Kidd is one of history’s most controversial figures — a Scottish sea captain who sailed with a legitimate privateering commission from the English Crown, yet ended his days hanged as a pirate in 1701. To this day, historians debate whether Kidd was truly a pirate or a man betrayed by the very government that sent him to sea.
Commissioned to hunt pirates and enemy French ships, Kidd’s voyage unraveled through a combination of a mutinous crew, bad luck, and political abandonment. His capture of the Quedagh Merchant — a ship sailing under French passes — was used against him at trial. His legendary buried treasure has never been found, and the mystery of Captain Kidd endures to this day.
